red wasn’t a sonically cohesive album, but the thing is, that album was so incredibly important to so many people. it was written from such a place of burning, desperate heartbreak, and it’s the album that we immediately go to when we are feeling those emotions. speak now wasn’t particularly cohesive either, but my god that album is special. it is so special. yeah those records are a bit like patchwork quilts, but they are damn good patchwork quilts that we will be comforted by for the rest of our lives. the level of sonic cohesion in 1989 is unprecedented compared to taylor’s previous albums (and most records that i’ve ever listened to) and she should be really proud of that, because it gives a really wonderful and meticulous quality to the album. but i just hope taylor is proud of her less cohesive albums too, because in the end we’re all here for her songwriting and the person that she is, and those qualities have always been there. it makes me really sad to think that she might not be as proud of those albums, especially considering the hell she was given by the media during those times.
